JANE WYMAN PRESENTS THE FIRESIDE THEATER

In the mid 1950s and early 1960s many film stars, making the transition to television, were cast in 'drama anthologies,' the prestige series format of the period, chose to host anthology programs similar to those made popular by Robert Montgomery and Loretta Young . While the The Loretta Young Show (1953-61) was the standard bearer of the filmed 'drama anthologies' of the period many of the consequent series offered their own innovations to the basic format.

Despite sharing the same network (NBC), sponsor (P&G) with the more established The Loretta Young Show Wyman's anthology series differed significantly from Young's in a number of key respects. From conception for her series Jane Wyman eschewed the elaborate gowns and dramatic entrances identified with her friend Loretta Young in favour of a subdued glamour and unadorned introductions more in keeping with her soft and sympathetic movie image. Of these series The Jane Wyman Show enjoyed the greatest popularity and longevity lasting 3 Seasons in prime-time and enjoying an extended and profitable run in syndication.

From its superior casts featuring well known stars as well as up and coming stars and eclectic source material to the accomplished scripts of Quinn Martin (The Untouchables, 1959-63), Aaron Spelling (The Mod Squad, 1968-73), Rod Serling (The Twilight Zone, 1959-64) and Gene Rodenberry (Star Trek, 1966-69) it is easy to recognize the quality of the productions presented on The Jane Wyman Show. While this set only consists of 14 surviving shows they are a great addition to any collection of rare TV shows.

MANY OF THESE EPISODES ALSO INCLUDE THE ORIGINAL NETWORK COMMERICALS MAKING THEM EVEN MORE RARE. .
