The Television Academy Hall of Fame was founded by a former president of the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, the late John H. Mitchell, to honor individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to television.

In 1986 some of the greatest names in early television gathered to honor 7 of TV’s early pioneers into the TV Hall of Fame. New members inducted  included: Steve Allen, Fred Coe, Walt Disney, Jackie Gleason, Mary Tyler Moore, Frank Stanton, and Burr Tillstrom.
